The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie donated more than $1.8 million total to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation (GPRHF) and to Habitat for Humanity (HFH) on Thursday. The club held a special event to distribute the two large cheques in the Paradise Inn Rotary Room.Regional Hospital FoundationTo the GPRHF, $850,000 was donated towards new equipment and specialists for the new hospital not provided by Alberta Health Services. Its for our Key to Care Capital Campaign and Rotary has picked equipment that they would like all the funds to go to, said Dawn Miller, the major gifts officer for the GPRHF.It will bring in new service, maybe a specialist that can come to our city. It just makes our hospital good, but now we can make it great with this new equipment. This isnt the first large-scale donation the Rotary Club has made to the hospital, previously donating $150,000 when the Key to Care Capital Campaign was launched, which now brings the total donations from the club to $1 million.Though there is no set timeline yet for when new equipment will arrive, AHS does know what it will be providing to the GPRHF, allowing the foundation to focus more on its own personal wish list.We can reach for the stars now and say, Okay, now we can get this piece of equipment we never even thought we could even afford, said Miller.Habitat for Humanity

Also handed out at Rotarys function was a $980,000 cheque addressed to Habitat for Humanity, which will fund constructing two duplexes to house four families.Jim Kjorlien, director of construction for HFH Edmonton, said the donation is the largest contribution the affiliate has ever received. The Rotary Club to come together like this is truly amazing, said Kjorlien. To fund four homes at one time just hasnt happened in our history so were very excited to be working with them.HFH has currently stationed eight homes in Grande Prairie and has helped 14 families find stability.Kjorlien said once shovels hit the ground, the non-profit organizations Family Services Division will begin screening families for eligibility to occupy the new homes and is optimistically set to be ready before winter next year. After families are moved in, they have the option to stay indefinitely in the units.(For) a lot of families, its a helping hand up, not a hand out, so a lot of families will outgrow the program, so to speak, as we take 25 per cent of their income and it puts stability into their lives, said Kjorlien.A lot of families will move on from anywhere from two-to-three-to-five years and we buy the home back, renovate it and we put another habitat family into the home. Its truly a sustainable program.
